For Sutherson Ganeshon, the Solar Homes rebate announcement in August 2018 came at exactly the right time for he and his family who had just purchased their home in Bayswater in Melbourne’s outer east. He says they chose solar primarily for environmental reasons but also for the savings they hoped they would make.
In October 2018, 14 panels were installed on their home. Sutherson says the application process wasn’t difficult and, in the end, they went for quality over price. Once the system was installed, the first thing they did was replace the old gas heater with an electric one. He says the cost savings were great in spring and summer, dropping from $300 pre-solar to just $30 in summer. On average, he says the savings are around $240 a month. An IT worker, Sutherson is now looking to purchase a battery.
