Technical mentoring and support

Growing Victoria’s clean energy workforce.

On-site technical mentoring and support for electricians, electrical engineers and licensed electrical inspectors to install or inspect solar PV and battery systems.

This technical mentoring and support is fully funded by Solar Victoria and provided free of charge to eligible participants until early 2025.

Technical mentoring and support is aimed at encouraging a higher level of competence and confidence to install or inspect solar PV and battery systems, and ensuring installations comply with all safety and industry standards. It is also aimed at encouraging more existing licensed electrical inspectors (LEIs) to feel comfortable to take on solar work.

Mentoring provides expert technical knowledge and support from within the industry and is intended to see LEIs and electricians with solar-specific skills continue to grow in number.

This will help ensure Victoria has an ongoing supply of skilled workers to support growth in the renewable and clean energy sector.

Check if you are eligible for mentoring

Mentoring is available to:

  • Electricians and electrical engineers who have completed Solar Victoria funded training, including upskilling to design and install PV and/or battery systems.
  • Current LEIs, electricians and engineers
  • Existing LEIs who have inspected a system installed under our programs or who Solar Victoria approves to undertake this technical mentoring and support.
  • Existing LEIs and licensed installers recommended by Solar Victoria to participate in this mentoring and support.

When and how it is delivered

Technical mentoring and support is available until early 2025.

Mentoring sessions are delivered on-site by arrangement across metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria.

Each session involves a minimum of one 2-hour session per person, delivered face-to-face and on-site. Mentoring sessions will include the following:

  • Clarifying any focus areas for the mentee, discussion of current knowledge, relevant standards and required documentation.
  • The required tools and equipment and their use.
  • For electricians, technical feedback on observations of design and installation;
  • For LEIs, confirming compliance standards being set by the LEIs and provision of documentation and guidance to support the inspection process, particularly around any improvement opportunities.

Following the mentoring sessions, participants will have access to 30 days of technical support by email or phone.

How to apply

The National Electrical and Communications Association (NECA) can provide individual mentoring or small group sessions (with a maximum of four participants) to electricians and LEIs at several locations across Victoria. Contact NECA to arrange your mentoring session.
